Builders and Pilots of the RV-12 are encouraged to participate!
This is an add on to Ron's excellent point for $37k RV12 discussion. You can build a great glass panel today for a fraction of the avionics package from Van's.
Mount a pair of iPads on the panel. On the left side, Engine Management System and Electronic Flight Information System data using TruTrak iMonitor EMS (http://www.trutrakap.com/products/iMonitorEMS.html). It sends data (wirelessly, via Bluetooth) to iPad or iPhone (second backup). The layout is customizable. The cost is $1100 for the probes, engine data module and the Bluetooth sender for Rotax (& should work for Viking). An example from their webpage on an iPad:
Other apps do EFIS too on the iPad and TruTrak also has an EFIS (http://www.trutrakap.com/products/EFIS_GP.html), in a integrated unit. They will definitely do one for iPAD, maybe do EMS and EFIS on a single iPAD. If so than you can have a second iPAD as a display+ second backup. Your Iphone becomes the third backup and if you really want more insurance with a fourth backup, add some steam gauges: oil pressure, oil temperature, compass, slip indicator.
You can put WingX Pro (http://www.hiltonsoftware.com/) or ForeFlight (http://www.foreflight.com/ipad) on the right hand display too!
A handheld radio tied to a built-in antenna and our headsets.
Cost (outside of personal iPad) : $1100+ $500 (right side iPad)= $1600 (don't know how much EFIS app will cost when out) or about $2k with radio(maybe).
The only issue that I keep hearing about iPad is the insufficient screen brightness but the new one will be out this month or next and they keep improving the screen. Keeping my fingers crossed on this for now.
Do you really need an EFIS with the Viking? It is fully liquid cooled, all you should need is tach, water temp, oil pressure and maybe oil temp.

That is sure a neat setup! Not only reasonable in price, but I like what it does and how it does it too. Maybe on my next plane.
Permalink Reply by Rahul Saini on February 8, 2012 at 3:54pm Don, word has it....once you build a RV12 you do not want to build anything else (in the good sense) :)
Glad to see your engine finally making it's way home.

Well, it is habit forming I think. Sometimes I think how much faster the next 12 would be for me, but I am always one for a challenge. Right now (if some deal on a partly made 12 don't show up first) I think I might build a Onex next. Wings that fold in an instant, able to go upside down, faster, etc.
