Flying The RV12 Viking Yesterday

Had a chance to go flying yesterday and was able to get in a couple of hours.  I made a minor change on the pitot tube and it made a big difference.  I have it mounted on the stall warnner inspection cover and been told might be in the prop wash.  It's actually to the right of the stall warnner and has been reading low from day one.  The problem wasn't location, it was the 1/4" aluminum tubing.  When I cut the tubing I failed to clean up the hole.  Once I cleaned up the hole it gave me a larger…See More

David, I was wondering how much was the FWF from Van's for the 12 when you are using your own 912? Can you share that information. I understand that you will be using some add-ons form the current install besides the engine so some insight will…

Ron I would most likely be going with a Viking if didn’t already have a 912 with 130 hour.  Since I remove the Rotax and Avionics I save a ton.  I like following the post on the Viking and look forward to more performance stats as…

Hi Ron, It was nice talking to you today. I think you can do a great glass panel for ~$2k to make this a true ~$39k brand spanking new plane (no paint though). Here is what can be done relatively easily and in a budget, Mount a pair of iPads on the…

RV12 with Viking Engine for $37,000

While helping Jan out  at Sebring last week we introduced a marketing program that generated a lot of activity.   If you total up Vans air frame kits you come up with a figure of $21,750.00.  That is and air frame including landing gear, canopy, seats, and wiring harness.  What you don't get is avionics, and engine.   Add to the airframe number a Viking firewall forward package for $13,000.00.  A prop, spinner and cowl you get $15,224.00.  Total for airframe and engine----$36,974.00.  Now add…See More

I forgot to mention that all my take-offs were without flaps.  My next test will be at 7500 msl with a 15 degree pitch.  As this is a thinner prop. the high altitude may have an effect on the speeds.  If results are good this is good information for the high altitude flyers.  I'm a 3 to 4 m ' flyer.    Ron RussSee More

RV12 Viking Second Prop. Test

I had a chance to fly the Viking RV N97HV for about four hours the past two days.  Warp Drive sent me a high profile prop for testing on my RV. It is a 68"  diameter ground adjustable.  I started with a 15 degrees pitch and takeoff roll was still a little over 200 ft.  I was over 100 ft. at the thousand foot marker.  Ran full throttle in four different directions at 4,000 ft. msl.  Average ground speed was 136.5 mph at an average rpm of 5,410.  Indicated air speed was 131 mph.Second test was…See More

NEW PROP TO TEST FOR VIKING RV12

NEW PROP TO TEST I have been working with Warp Drive on a new prop to give me more top end speed and a little less take off speed.  If you haven't noticed on the video my RV12 Viking has a very rapid take off.  Last week a friend in his RV9A was behind me  and said my take off was about 200 ft. and at the thousand foot marker I was about 100 ft. AGL.  This is great but I'm on a 6,000 ft runway and could roll a little longer.  Recently there was a good article in Kit Plane with Dave Martins…See More

Prop Pitch on RV12 Viking

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 7:45pm 1 Comment

Flew the RV12 Viking for 2.1 hours today.  Started out with a pitch of 13.5 degrees.  Ran full throttle at an average of 5,600 RPM going North, South  East West for about three minutes in each direction.  I flew until there was no longer an increase in speed.  Averaged altitude was 5,100 MSL.  All speed were recorded in each direction and average out to 135.5 MPH.  Coolant temp stayed around 200 degrees f.

Ran second test with a pitch of 15 degrees.  RPM averaged out to 5,300. …

Return Line

Brenda:  Use the existing 1/4 return you installed going to the fuel tank.  You shorten the forward line in the cockpit area and connect it to the manifold.  If you can email me at russra@windstream.net.  Its easier than trying to go through 12 town every time I email.  Ron

Flying the RV12 Viking Today

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 8:32pm 1 Comment

Before flying today I took two 5 gallon fuel containers to my local Kroger fuel station.  Got my .03 discount and purchased 10 gallons at $3.17 for 87 ethanol.  Topped off airplane and prepared to fly.  Takeoff is always exciting as by the time I have full throttle I'm in the air.  I love it when I look down at the terminal about 250 feet above it and look at the guys standing outside watching and listing to my takeoff.  Its very quiet.  I cruised over five of the local airports at 4500 msl…

Viking Fuel Line

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 7:55pm 1 Comment

I just got back from CZL after flying the RV12 Honda Viking for 1.8 hours.  The fuel line going from the fuel manifold to the engine is under high pressure, about 45 PSI.  The fuel injection line is 5/16 and purchased from local auto store.  Fuel injection requires high pressure from the pumps to the engine.  You have two clear plastic fuel filters which take low fuel pressure before the fuel pump.  There is a high pressure fuel filter just before the fuel enters the engine.  The Rotax…

Ron, I have been following your progress with the Viking engine installation on VAF. Too bad about the lack of civility by some of the posters there.

I too am interested in the Viking and look forward to learning of your progress.
